José Aguilar


Holds a BA in Psychology, a Masters on Project Management and Masters on Development Management from London School of Economics, as a Chevening Scholar. José Aguilar is currently the Executive Director of Horizonte Positivo, a private sector Think and Do Tank that promotes intersectoral agreements to reestablish governability and collaborates with public policy reforms, focusing on Costa Rica s human development. Since March 2013, he started and leads a social business called La Esquina that canalizes gang members creativity and energy into designing clothes, caps, backpacks and other products for young people. At the same time, he works with high-ranking government officials, media owners and key stakeholders in order to redesign at risk youth public policies. The first phase of this project takes place in La Cueva del Sapo in La Carpio Community (one of the most violent neighborhood in the Capital. He worked as Social Development Advisor for local governments and as consultant for the EU in Central American Border Zones. He then founded the NGO Fundación Acción Joven (FAJ) using his own savings. FAJ uses participatory methodology to prevent school dropouts of at-risk students in public high schools. It has developed alliances with the Costa Rican Ministries of Education, Welfare, Culture, Security, and private firms. The Government recently declared it as “Organization of Public National Interest.” He is an Ashoka, a Fellow of the eighth class of the Central America Leadership Initiative and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
